Abstract

The global plastic waste crisis has driven the development of eco-friendly packaging materials derived from local bioresources. This study aims to develop ARENBIOPACK, a bioplastic made from galactomannan extracted from sugar palm fruit (Arenga pinnata) and nanocellulose derived from sugar palm trunk, using the solvent casting method. The process involves galactomannan extraction, nanocellulose isolation through acid hydrolysis, and blending with glycerol as a plasticizer to enhance film flexibility. Characterization included mechanical strength, surface morphology, water resistance, and biodegradability tests. Results indicated that adding 5–10% nanocellulose increased tensile strength by up to 35% and reduced water absorption by 22% compared to control samples. Biodegradation tests showed 85% degradation within 21 days under moist soil conditions. This research demonstrates the potential of ARENBIOPACK as a biodegradable packaging material that supports the circular bioeconomy, utilizing sugar palm biomass waste as a sustainable and value-added functional material.
