Abstract

The rapid development of digital media and the growing popularity of Korean dramas have influenced adolescents’ perceptions of romantic relationships through idealized media representations. This phenomenon can be explained by Jean Baudrillard’s Simulacra Theory, which argues that media creates hyperreality, where media representations are perceived as more real than reality itself. This study aims to examine the influence of the hyperreality of romance in Korean dramas on adolescents’ perceptions of ideal relationships. A quantitative survey was conducted with 100 respondents aged 17–24 years who regularly watch Korean dramas. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed with SmartPLS 4. The findings reveal that the hyperreality of romance in Korean dramas has a positive and significant effect on adolescents’ perceptions of ideal relationships, with a path coefficient (β) of 0.796, a T-statistic of 25.398, and a p-value of 0.000. The R-square value of 0.634 indicates that the independent variable explains 63.4% of the variance in ideal relationship perception. These findings contribute to communication studies by reinforcing the relevance of Baudrillard’s Simulacra Theory in understanding the influence of media on adolescents’ perceptions of romantic relationships.
