Ummatan Wasaṭan Sebagai Landasan Moderasi Beragama: Kajian Tafsir Tahlili Terhadap QS al-Bāqarah/2: 143

Abstract

The concept of ummatan wasaṭan in QS al-Bāqarah/2: 143 serves as one of the fundamental principles for understanding religious moderation in Islam. However, this concept is often interpreted merely as the idea of being "in the middle," without a comprehensive examination based on Qur'anic exegesis. This study aims to analyze the concept of ummatan wasaṭan in QS al-Bāqarah/2: 143 through the tahlili method of Qur'anic interpretation and to examine its relevance to religious moderation. This research employs a qualitative library research approach using the tahlili method. The data were collected from the Qur'an, classical and contemporary Qur'anic commentaries (tafsir), as well as relevant scholarly literature, and were analyzed using a descriptive-analytical approach. The findings reveal that the phrase ummatan wasaṭan refers not only to a "middle community" but also to a community characterized by justice, excellence, and balance in practicing Islamic teachings. These values provide an essential foundation for strengthening religious moderation through fairness, balance, tolerance, and adherence to Islamic principles. Therefore, the concept of ummatan wasaṭan is not merely a normative identity of Muslims but also serves as a guiding principle for fostering harmonious religious life within a pluralistic society.
