Abstract

Mental health has become an important issue in modern life, as stress, anxiety, and sleep disorders are increasingly experienced by society. In the context of Muslim communities, there is a need for a relaxation approach that is safe, easy to practice, and aligned with Islamic spiritual values. This article aims to formulate an integrative conceptual model of Qur’anic recitation therapy as an Islamic relaxation approach to support spirituality-based mental health. This study employs an integrative literature review by examining Qur’anic verses, tafsir, Islamic literature, relaxation theories, and scientific articles on murottal, sound therapy, anxiety, sleep, physiological responses, and brain activity. The findings show that Qur’anic recitation functions as worship, remembrance of Allah, healing, and a means of strengthening inner peace. Scientifically, murottal is understood as a longitudinal mechanical sound wave processed by the auditory system, influencing attention and emotions, and supporting the relaxation response through the balance of the autonomic nervous system. Empirical evidence indicates the potential of murottal in reducing student stress, decreasing anxiety among the elderly, stabilizing the physiological responses of infants and neonates, and improving sleep quality. The implication of this article is the availability of a conceptual foundation for developing a simple, non-pharmacological, and contextual Islamic relaxation intervention for Muslim communities.
