Abstract
The current global ecological crisis is rooted in a crisis of perspective in viewing nature. Modern humans tend to treat nature as an object of unlimited exploitation, which triggers physical damage to the earth. This study examines the concept of ecotheology in the book Al-Mīzān fī Tafsīr al-Qur’ān by Muḥammad Ḥusein Ṭabaṭaba’i. This research is qualitative using library research with a descriptive-analytical method with a thematic interpretation approach (maudhū’i) to explore Muḥammad Ḥusein Ṭabaṭaba’i’s philosophical-theological views on verses related to ecotheology. The results of this study indicate that Al-Mīzān fī Tafsīr al-Qur’ān by Muḥammad Ḥusein Ṭabaṭaba’i offers an ecotheological structure through the relationship between Humans, Nature, and God in an inseparable philosophical integrative manner. Then the principles of ecotheology include first, tauhid as the main foundation of all ecotheological principles, second, human responsibility as khalifah to carry the mandate to preserve nature, third, human ecological awareness by seeing all components of nature as having consciousness (syu’ur) and glorifying the Creator in their own way. The implications of Muḥammad Ḥusein Ṭabaṭaba’i’s ecotheology perspective in responding to contemporary issues demand a transformation from anthropocentric to theocentric, starting from the restoration of human spiritual relations with God, which will undoubtedly provide a strong spiritual foundation for environmental conservation.
