Peran Greenpeace Dalam Upaya Perlindungan Hutan Studi Kasus : Masyarakat Adat Awyu di Papua Selatan
Main Article Content
Abstract
Deforestation in Papua caused by the expansion of oil palm plantations has posed a serious threat to environmental sustainability and the rights of indigenous communities, particularly the Awyu people, who are heavily dependent on the forest as a source of their social, economic and cultural livelihood. This study aims to analyse the role and advocacy strategies employed by Greenpeace in supporting forest protection and the defence of the rights of the Awyu indigenous community. The method employed is qualitative research using a case study approach through the analysis of documents, organisational reports, and academic literature, utilising the Transnational Advocacy Network (TAN) framework and the concept of Environmental Security. The findings indicate that Greenpeace acts as an active non-state actor in environmental advocacy through public campaigns, legal support, and moral and political pressure on the state and corporations. These efforts have succeeded in raising public and international awareness of the issue of deforestation in Papua. However, transnational advocacy still has limitations in driving long-term structural change. Therefore, the protection of indigenous forests requires synergy between international advocacy, capacity-building for indigenous communities, and a government commitment to ensuring environmental sustainability and social justice.
