Abstract

Multicultural counseling has become increasingly important in culturally diverse societies such as Indonesia, where differences in values, norms, and individual backgrounds can influence the counseling process. This study aims to examine the concepts, models, and types of multicultural guidance and counseling, as well as the importance of multicultural competence for counselors. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using a literature review method by analyzing relevant books and scientific journals. The findings indicate that the effectiveness of multicultural counseling is largely determined by the counselor’s ability to understand clients’ cultural backgrounds, avoid subjective bias, and adapt counseling approaches accordingly. Several models can be applied, including the culture-centered model, integrative model, and ethnomedical model, as well as etic, emic, and transcultural approaches. The results highlight that a lack of cultural sensitivity may reduce the effectiveness of the counseling process. Therefore, enhancing multicultural competence is essential for counselors to provide inclusive, adaptive, and culturally responsive services for clients from diverse backgrounds.
