Abstract
This study examines the concept of asbāb al-nuzūl and the chronology of the revelation of the Qur'an by tracing the methodological principles agreed upon by scholars, its epistemological function in interpretation, and the construction of the chronology of revelation compiled by Muslim Muslim and Western scholars. Specifically, this study examines five fundamental principles of asbāb al-nuzūl, their urgency in understanding the verses of the Qur'an, and how the historical context of revelation influences the establishment of law and the interpretation of text. The research method applied in this study is qualitative research, using a descriptive historical approach. In addition, this study compares two models of revelation chronology, namely the seven marhalah chronology version of Muhammad Abid al-Jabirī and the four periodization version of Theodore Noldeke. Both models are analyzed to see their methodological contributions to contemporary Qur'anic studies. The results of the study show that asbāb al-nuzūl plays an important role in maintaining the accuracy of interpretation, preventing misunderstandings of the meaning of verses, and explaining the wisdom behind the legislation of laws. Meanwhile, the study of the chronology of revelation provides a historical framework that enriches the thematic and contextual approaches to the interpretation of the Qur'an.
